What advice would you give your younger self?
Passing on advice is one way to grow as a person. It helps you learn as knowledge is passed from someone’s mouth to your ears. When you process this, the knowledge will help your own development.
Everyone’s journey is different, when experience is shared you can use it to help your growth.
Whilst we learn from our peers by asking questions, reading books, and listening to Podcasts, do you ever think, “What would I have told myself at 21 years of age?” (Read on to find out what I was doing at 21, and how advice would have helped me.)
I was thinking about this question recently and last week I asked this question in The 9PM Club on Clubhouse (Every night at 9PM.)
Lots of amazing answers came back and I thought I would share with you.
Personally, being more present and reading more books as I was younger for myself.
Here are some other answers, feel free to add your own at the end.
Spend time with family, loved ones, and friends.
Travel more.
Take no crap from others.
Stand up for yourself.
Tell myself I can do it.
Exercise.
Party harder.
It is ok to say no.
Be braver.
Follow your gut/instinct.
Take better care of yourself.
Create your own path.
Treat others the way you want to be treated.
Swim more.
Talk to others and share more.
Kill them with kindness.
You are where you need to be.
Time goes quickly.
Don’t worry too much.
Experience life more.
Get outside.
You can find positives in negative situations.
Hopefully, you can take something from the above.
What would you add?
At 21, I was following my passion for music and was starting a career in the industry. I had no goals at the time, I just learned on the job. I started on the radio doing a show promoting bands from Glasgow, I became head of music at the station quickly. I started to put on live concerts with the bands I liked, which led to opportunities scouting for a major label. In between the bands I was playing music, this led to DJIng. From this, I was offered a job running a famous music venue for a number of years and this led to experience in being part of the team running Scotland’s largest music festival.
I just learned as I went along and the journey was a lot of fun.
Though as the full-time job became more time-consuming, I was no longer putting as much effort into my own events, which meant I had no backup plan. Looking back, I would never have stopped what I was doing.
With the knowledge, I have gained since, with the experience I had then, combined it would have been powerful.
Not that I didn’t learn a lot in that time, in fact, I used that experience to find out what I was truly passionate about - which was the more creative side of events. Had I been told about saving, or having a backup plan, it would have made a redundancy in 2009 a little smoother. Thankfully I bounced back quickly, once I made a plan!
A culture of constant learning was installed in me at a young age, I took action to keep following my passion. Thankfully I met great people along the way to learn from.
Have a think about what you have learned over the years and would go back and tell your younger self. This advice could be invaluable for someone.
Please think about things you have learned through life and share with others if you can, you never know who you might help!
