What do you wish school taught you?
There is a quote I love that says “Schooling gets in the way of your education.” The injection of humour to the statement tickles my Scottish brain.
I askd a group of people what do they wish school had taught them, a lot of great subjects came up.
I have always believed I have learnt more outside of school and further education than I did in it.
Tim Ferriss talks about the timeline in the brilliant “The Four Hour Work Week.” This was the first book I saw that spoke of my own belief that societies timeline could be changed to suit your path.
Teaching is about history and remembering - step into the future, ask questions and be curious.
Here is the list below:
Be polite - manners cost nothing.
Etiquette. General rules in life, learning to be polite. How to act nice.
Be Curious - ask questions.
A class on General Knowledge, not just on history.
Communication skills. Being able to listen, role play.
Know about your boss being a jerk and not being scared to stand up to them.
How to form better relationships, how to listen - two ears and one mouth.
Cultural awareness. Understanding other parts of the world.
Equality and diversity. Learning the ins and outs of other cultures from your own.
With this, a better attitude towards other languages.
Not to be fearful of differences.
Understand that there are many types of individuals in life, that everyone is different.
Learning to read body language.
Dealing with conflict.
Safety tips for males and females. How to ensure people feel safe around you.
Learning how to deal with grief. Such as bereavements and breakups. It becomes part of life, so some tips to help here would be good.
Lessons in emotional intelligence.
Learning from business minds and also an introduction to politics.
Financial basics came up a lot.
Learning about buying houses and options available to you.
To work on the mind, a class about self-development, a positive mindset and affirmations could go a long way to helping to get into the right frame of mind.
Self-care. Meditation. Learning what anxiety is and how to combat it.
Mental health disorders
Help build up resilience for future life.
Learn about body positivity and eating disorders.
Public Speaking skills.
Basics in life such as fixing cars, learning how to change a tyre for example. Added to that, learning how to change a plug.

Kung Fu
Software Development skills
Self-awareness. help with self-esteem. Learn to be confident. Ideas and passions should be encouraged. Not all careers are laid out for you, you can create your own business. Lessons in entrepreneurship.
Better opportunities and more work experience ideas.
You are taught some subjects in school which help you get to the next stage of education and work. Once you leave though, you learn a lot more. What do you wish school taught you?
The conversation kept flowing and we discussed many of the topics. One thing is for sure, we created a school that has lots of life skills and valuable cultural lessons that I would love to attend.
Learning never stops, it is a constant process for betterment.
