BAND STORY - King Tuts - Goal Setting for the band.
One Saturday night in December, I went back to one of my old haunts, King Tuts. I was the booker there for 3 years.
I saw this excellent band called, ‘The Youth and the Young.’
Afterwards, I got into a really interesting conversation with the singer Ryan about the band and we spoke
about their plans.
One thing that struck me when I asked him what was next for the band, was Ryan’s reply: “Probably Cathouse tonight!!”
They had just headlined Tuts on a Saturday, something they wanted to do for a long time.
I realised that this was their goal. They hadn’t actually planned or thought past this one goal.
They had nothing else set other than “looking for support slots, festivals etc”
I realised that with every band I had managed, we hit (and I am VERY proud of this fact) every goal we set. However a pattern emerged over the years:
Band A - “we want to play T in the Park” we did, then split up,
Band B – “we wanted a record deal & support slots.” We got them. We split up.
Band C – “we looked for a publishing deal.” Got one, then split up.
Every time the band hit its goal, there was nothing larger, there was no vision.
Why should there be? We were young, free and foolish!
It got me thinking about my own plans going forward. Possible coaching, or talks based on “Not a 9-5
Kind of Lifestyle.” What do my targets and goals like? Will they grow?
What is your vision? What are the goals to get you there? What is your vision past those goals?
What is your ideal gig (own company?), your major support slot (Client?)
Write it down.
P.S. As a big fan of music, I have a playlist on Spotify with some inspiring tracks, that will be updated regularly. Enjoy.
