It’s never too late to start…
Saturday afternoon, a bike ride down the river towards Bowling Harbour goes via the Titan Crane in Clydebank.
I have found being on the bike leads to a lot of niceties in passing, "hellos" and "how are you?"
I see 2 men having a cup of tea, besides their bikes. They shout "alright mate!?" and one of the guys makes it look like we have met before, it turns out we haven't. Though I have committed to cycling over towards them, so to save some embarrassment I kept going.
We started chatting.
A nice day, a great day for a cycle, not a cloud in the sky, yes it was cold. The men had their cups filled with warm liquid which they state "We love our tea!"
The older gentleman goes into his bag to bring out a cake which he offers me, it is a homemade Rocky Road, individually wrapped which he places down for me, socially distanced. A reminder “cyclists need all the food we can get,” is not lost over here. I am very grateful.
We talk over routes around Scotland, the West, and up North. I mention my Highlands and East Coast efforts over the last few months. I am frantically taking mental notes about Applecross, Skye, and the 5 Ferries routes. I am visioning the Spring and Summer months.
I ask their names, the younger one is Jim. The older gentleman points out Jim is the young one. turns out he is in his 50s now, he doesn't look it. Neither does Cameron, he is 66.
Cameron tells me he only started cycling a year ago. He is loving it. A reminder it is never too late to start anything.
A great reminder of the simple pleasures in life, good friends, a couple of bikes, a cup of tea, and sharing a cake over a 20-minute chat can really boost your mood.
I hope I meet them again.
What have you not started that you have wanted to for years?
Why not just start?
Cameron did and he is loving it.
You can too.
